On Monday, July 13, the Chief Medical Officer for Samaritan, Dr. Andrea Carter, entered a clinic and inappropriately confronted one of our colleagues. Dr. Carter was aggressive, demanding, confrontational, and may have violated Samaritan policies according to witnesses. Samaritan contracted a law firm to conduct an investigation, and witnesses were interviewed.
Witness testimony consistently demonstrates that Dr. Carter used profanity, intimidation, and abused her authority to violate multiple clinic practices and procedures.
Despite this, on July 30, the targets and witnesses were alerted of the investigation’s outcome: a mere meeting for Dr. Carter to apologize to them as a group.
Everyone courageously decided not to attend the meeting, and to hold out for actual accountability. An apology is not accountability. If one of us behaved as Dr. Carter did, would we be allowed to simply apologize without serious consequences? No!
