Local 8’s Race, Equity, and Social Justice (RESJ) Committee is going to be honoring the life and legacy of Dr. MLK Jr. on Monday, January 19th by serving out community.

We will be volunteering at Senator Rosa Franklin Park in Tacoma, WA to help restore the natural area by removing invasive plants, spreading mulch, and picking up litter.

This park holds special significance. Senator Rosa Franklin was the first African American woman to serve in the Washington State Senate and the first Black woman in the United States to be voted Senate President Pro Tempore by her peers. She served 20 years representing the 29th District in the Washington State Legislature (1991-1993 in the House of Representatives, 1993-2010 in the Senate). Her daughter, Sara Franklin, is OPEIU Local 8’s President!

Come join our work party rain or shine. All ages are welcome. Tools and training will be provided. Portable restroom available at the park.
